How to Read a Stock Chart (Candles & Trends)

Technical Analysis

🕯️ Anatomy of a Candlestick

The Language of Price Action

Green vs. Red

Candlesticks tell you the "story" of a specific time period (e.g., 1 day or 1 hour). They are superior to line charts because they show the emotional range of the market.

  • The Body: The wide part. It shows the difference between where the price Opened and Closed.
  • The Wicks (Shadows): The thin lines. They show the extreme High and Low prices reached during that period.

Live Example: High Volatility

Stocks with large "bodies" and long "wicks" indicate a fierce battle between buyers and sellers.

TSLA (Tesla Inc) $439.74 ▲
Known for large daily candles and long wicks, offering opportunities for day traders.

📈 Identifying the Trend

Don't Fight the Current

Market Structure

Markets don't move in straight lines; they move in waves. Identifying the direction of these waves is critical.

  • Uptrend (Bullish): The price makes Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL). Strategy: Buy the dips.
  • Downtrend (Bearish): The price makes Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL). Strategy: Sell the rallies.
  • Consolidation: The price moves sideways. Strategy: Wait for a breakout.

Live Example: Strong Uptrend

NVDA (NVIDIA Corp) $191.17 ▲
A classic "stair-step" uptrend driven by AI demand. Buyers consistently step in at higher prices.

🚧 Support & Resistance

Floors and Ceilings

  • Resistance (The Ceiling): A price level where sellers step in to stop the rise.

GOOGL (Alphabet Inc) $192.50 ▲

📊 Volume Analysis

The Fuel of the Market

Confirmation

Volume represents the number of shares traded. It is the "truth serum" for price action.

  • High Volume Breakout: Indicates institutional participation. Real move.
  • Low Volume Breakout: Indicates a lack of interest. potential "Fakeout."

Live Example: Volume Leader

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) $117.40 ▼
Consistently one of the most traded stocks, providing reliable volume signals.

🔗 Cheat Sheet

Quick rules for reading charts.

Trend First

Always zoom out. A daily red candle doesn't matter if the monthly chart is in a massive uptrend.

Wait for Close

A candle isn't finished until the time period ends. A "Green" candle can turn "Red" in the last 5 minutes.
